ENFJ-A - The Protagonist

no subject
Dodger lets out a soft sigh.]
Countries fall, new ones rise up. Pretty often. My country's been on the way to collapsing for a while, I figure it'll keep getting worse with all the tension between mutants and humans. The important thing is this - that land still exists, and the people still exist, even if the made-up borders change. Here- lemme look something up for you.
[Give him a moment to check something on his Watch...
...Ah. That's not the answer he was hoping for, but. Henry doesn't know as much about using the Watches, he probably won't double-check if Dodger smudges the truth here.]
...Same-sex marriage is legal in the country that exists there now. These searches seem to- generalize what's normal across universes where Earth exists. So... Bohemia's gone, but the culture's still there, and things are better than they were. For men like us, at least.
no subject
And he nods. ] Aye, they do in my time as well. It's just ... this is different.
[ Someone from the future telling him his kingdom doesn't exist when they're currently in the middle of war, fighting so hard for their king and their people, it kind of sucks.
But he has no intention of fact checking Dodger with the Watches or anything, so hearing you can just marry a man does brighten him a bit. Even if that sounds completely ridiculous. ]
It is? You won't be hanged? What about heirs? You can't very well pass your estate on if you've married another man. [ And he has another rapidfire thought- ]
What is my home called in your time?
no subject
You won't be hanged, no. Heirs... at least in America, you can adopt children whether you're married or not. It's harder for single people but if you're married it's the same process whether you're gay or not. And adopted kids are just... your kids. And... anyone can pass on their estate to whoever they want, married or not. I've heard of people leaving everything to their dog. Marriage in my time is really just... a tax benefit, more than anything. Most people marry for love but that doesn't keep people together, y'know? Spend long enough in one house and you're bound to piss each other off.
[Dodger was raised by a single mother abandoned by her boyfriend, and then by a gang leader and his mail-order bride who fought constantly and then took out their anger on their children. The only woman he ever considered marrying was actively afraid of him, and to some extent Dodger enjoyed that. And now she's gone, raising his child by herself. He's definitely the last person someone should talk to about marriage, and he knows that to some extent.]
It's called the Czech Republic. Used to be Czechoslovakia, before that. Don't ask me too much past that, though, I never really got that interested in European countries. Most of what I know about is... England and Italy.
[Because learning about his heritage and his brother's heritage, at least, was important to him.]
no subject
[ a lot of that doesn't make sense to him, or even sound real, but it does give him a little bit of hope. Maybe Bohemia doesn't just crash and burn, and maybe someday his descendants will be out there loving whomever they want to love.
He huffs softly at Dodger's sentiments about marriage. ]
That's definitely the case for arranged marriages I'm sure. But not if you really love one another. Even if you fight once in a while, that's nothing.
[ Martin loved his mother very much, and the both of them in turned loved him. So he is coming from the exact opposite end of the spectrum as Dodger. Henry is also a bit of a romantic himself.
But he relaxes back a little, rolling the country names around in his mind a moment or two. It's a little bit salty to hear that England and Italy escaped the 15th century unscathed, but that's fine he supposes. ]
The Czech Republic. A Republic? I would never imagine... but I'm glad it's there.
cw: something upsettingly close to american current events
[He's thinking about Esikko, and he's also thinking about a woman he was in love with a few months before coming here. And maybe his boyfriend too, to some extent. It's rare for Dodger to fall for someone who doesn't make him incredibly angry more often than not.
Henry is the rare exception, and that makes this whatever-it-is all the more worth fostering.]
America's a republic, too. It's not all it's cracked up to be. But... I don't know, maybe better than a kingdom. There's more people to keep a president in check than a king, even if... they don't always do it the way you'd want.
[In Dodger's world, far too many politicians are afraid of mutants. Even if they elected a pro-mutant president, somehow, he'd likely be unable to pass any protective laws with the world in its current state. It's led to Dodger being incredibly burnt out about politics in general - and it's not like he can legally vote anyway.]
no subject
[ Though Henry's expression saddens a little. Of course he's thinking of his parents- including Radzig, because he loved them as well. But he's also thinking about the fight he and Hans had had at the stocks, how it separated them for far too long. But he doesn't want to rip out his guts... It's gotten close to that kind of anger maybe, but never that far.
After a moment, he shakes the thoughts away. ]
It sounds like even after all these years, running a kingdom— a country? is still a huge fucking mess.
[ He gets being burnt out too. Henry isn't there yet at home, but he does stress daily over the situation while he's here. And he may have a little more privilege as a bastard son, but he gets not having a lot of rights to do anything. ]
no subject
I'm sure it's tough to be a ruler. Just.. hard to care, when you're pretty much a peasant with no upward mobility. Y'know?
[Dodger hesitates, and rests his head on Henry's shoulder.]
If there were no laws against it, if you went somewhere where no one really cared who you went after, would you want to marry a man?
[Feels like a dangerous question, especially since Dodger himself is not interested in marriage even a tiny bit. But he can't help continuing to poke at Henry's preferences and see how much of a shot he has.]
no subject
But he huffs a little. ] Yeah. When you're a peasant there's not many places to go. I only lucked out because of Radzig, and Sir Hans insisting I'm treated well.
[ He smiles fondly, but there's a grieving sort of ache in his chest when he does bring Hans up. Not that he's going to share that, or elaborate further. He may not fully understand Dodger's (or his own) feelings but he knows bringing Hans up could end up making one or both of them annoyed.
The question though seizes in his chest too, getting stuck in his throat like a tangle of knots. It's not something he's considered before. Of course he'd assumed he would marry Bianca originally, and that would be that. He hasn't even dared try to figure out what he feels about Hans to pursue touching him, let alone marrying him. ]
I ... [ He pauses, but then thinks it's kind of silly he has to even think about it. Whether it's him and another man, or anyone and their same-sex lover, the answer should be the same actually. ]
Of course, I think I'd like it if anyone could marry whoever they wanted.
no subject
[He shifts, enough that he can stare intently at Henry.]
You specifically, would you rather marry a man or a woman if you had the option? And if no one else cared either way.
[There's correct answer to this question. Of course there is. But Dodger couldn't exactly say why it's that important, because it's also where the line of questioning ends.
Maybe it's just that he knows it's a tough question for Henry. Some part of Dodger, the part that was raised and trained to seek out information and secrets, is circling this like a shark smelling blood in the water.]
no subject
[ He frowns, narrowing his eyes like he's shouldering some kind of pain. ] I don't know the answer to that yet.
[ Except he kind of does. He's just a few steps behind that in the process. Being here for months away from Hans only makes him think about being with him more though. Henry grits his teeth, glancing off to the side. It's really frustrating, even still, that he can't just go rescue Hans from his terrible tower. ]
Fine, yes. I would ... choose a man. But that is impossible, and I like women fine, so it doesn't even matter.
no subject
Nothing's impossible here. There might be a way to go to someone else's world, if we ever leave.
[He's not going to say his own world - he's not even sure Henry would like it there, with all of the neon lights and screens and open debauchery. And the huge mutant population. Dodger isn't even planning to go back there himself if he can help it, but there is that beginning of a pipe dream in the back of his head.]
no subject
As interesting and wonderous (and horrifying) as it would be to go to all sorts of places, his answer is immediate. ]
I have to go home. I have to save him.
[ from the way things are going at home, no one else is in even the slightest hurry to get Hans free. But Henry vowed to keep him safe. ]
no subject
You could really benefit from practicing a little selfishness.
[He nearly seeks out another kiss, before thinking better of it and just flopping against Henry.]
He's probably going to end up here sooner or later. Then you can do... whatever you want with him.
[He's really failing to hide how jealous he is.]
no subject
I made a promise. I don't break my promises.
[ And you know, he's in love with Hans. It's whatever.
He huffs softly though, relaxing a little bit again. ]
You don't have to say it like that ... [ He still doesn't know how to respond when Dodger gets prickly about Hans. But it is getting more difficult to pretend he doesn't notice. ]
Anyway, they don't seem to like bringing in guests from my time. Maybe I was just an experiment.
no subject
They don't like bringing people from my time, either.
[He thinks it's sort of romantic that the person furthest in the past and the person furthest in the future could maybe be together. But he's keeping that to himself, for now.]
I'll still keep an eye out for him, for you. So you'll know as soon as he shows up.
no subject
And yes, it is a very romantic notion, even Henry couldn't deny that. If only the Hans wrench wasn't just there stuck in the middle. ]
... You don't have to do that. But ... I'd appreciate it. I need to know the second he's here, if he ever is.
[ For now at least Dodger gets Henry mostly to himself... ]
no subject
[Because it's important to Henry, and because Henry would be upset if Dodger met Hans and didn't tell him immediately. Dodger still couldn't care less if the lord lives or dies, but he likes to imagine if their roles were reversed, and it was Henry pining after him, he'd do the same if someone from Dodger's world showed up.]
If he's here then you don't have to worry too much about going back, right? So it's in my best interest, too.
no subject
[ It's still just kind of weird to have someone do something without ulterior motives or expectation of payment or a favor. Not impossible though. Granted, wanting Henry to want to stay here is a motive in itself.
He smiles some. ]
It's not that simple. But that would significantly lessen the worry, yes.
no subject
[Dodger knew after a month here that he didn't want to leave. That nothing is worth giving up the chance to spend his days in a sex resort with a blank slate reputation and no laws against his own existence. But that doesn't mean he didn't leave things behind, like his best friend or his boss or his daughter or any chance of ever seeing his brother again.
His boyfriend and his dog are in distant fifth place to any of those people, but the thought of them does cross his mind briefly.]
Hey. Let's worry about our worlds when we have to. We've got nothing but time here, may as well actually enjoy it.
no subject
[ he agrees with a nod. If Hans did come here, the decision to stay or leave (if they ever got one) would be even more difficult, and Henry would worry for him more than for himself.
He really does miss his dog and horse though too. ]
You're right. It won't do to mope about it right now. We're here, and that's that.
