[ Henry listens, eventually giving a nod, though he pulls Dodger in (or rather it's more like it pulls himself to Dodger) to kiss him against the temple. ]

I'm sorry to hear it. But then, I'm glad...you've gotten away from all that.

[ It sounds awful, and that's even before all the stigma of having powers, which Henry can't really comprehend anyway. He also thinks maybe he should think of better questions. Asking Dodger things about his home always gets sad. ]

[The kiss helps, at least. It gets Dodger to stop stewing in the past quite so much, and it makes his face turn a little red.]

I got away, I don't have to answer to anyone here, I've got real friends. I've got you. And I don't have to worry about getting arrested for lighting a cigarette off my fingers.

[Maybe it's not quite that serious. But police officers can be trigger-happy, and Dodger doesn't exactly scream trustworthiness. He tries his best to just stay where authority figures are not.]

...Have you ever killed someone before? I mean- someone who didn't earn it?

[ Henry smiles a little at that color in Dodger's face, nodding slowly. ]

Least of your worries here, probably.

[ Then his gaze drops a moment, as though he's pondering taking a drink. He's definitely killed people that deserved it, but those that didn't? ]

Sure. I've killed someone just for fighting under a different banner. They'd kill me for the same reason. Other than that, I think everyone I've killed .... I could justify it in some way. As ... as something they deserved. Or maybe a mercy.

[He nods. Killing people under a different banner... yeah, that feels equivalent to most of what he's done. Killing people because they were on the wrong side of a war neither of them were that invested in. Even if Dodger did believe in Augustine's cause for a long time, that didn't mean he always knew or cared whether the people he was sent after really deserved it.]

Same for me. For... most of them. They deserved it, they would have killed me, or- it was a mercy.

[He chews his cheek briefly.]

I've only killed one person I wanted to take back. I mean there's... people that needed to die, but I didn't like killing them. But... one person I shouldn't have killed. It sticks with you a lot more, I think, when you can't tell yourself a good story about it.

[ Somehow, it's a sin to murder, but God keeps allowing all these fights to break out, He lets innocent lakeside camps be massacred, and so on. Henry struggles with these thoughts more frequently than he'd like to admit one way or another.

He also gives a nod. ]

Sometimes they would have met a worser fate.

[ Pausing a little, he takes a drink and then continues slowly. ]

I killed someone recently... for revenge. And even though the bastard fucking deserved it, sometimes I still wonder if I made the right choice. I don't think taking a life is ever really simple.

[Dodger relaxes a bit more. This is always the most nerve-wracking part of getting close to someone - showing the blood on his hands, and hoping they're okay with it. And it seems like he and Henry are about on equal terms.]

It gets simple, after a while. But it makes you wonder if you're still human. Sooner or later... you stop feeling sick, you stop questioning it, you stop thinking of the people you kill like they mattered. It feels more like... butchering livestock.

[He takes his bottle again, and drinks the rest of it. About a quarter of what was left, which... leaves his head swimming a little bit. That's probably fine.]

But I killed Arzial, and I killed the man that raised me. And I think wiping those two fuckers out makes up for a lot of my sins.

[horseliberator]

[ Henry's hands are bloodier than they first appear, for sure. He is a good boy for the most part, but he's ...angry. Deep down. ]

It does get easier, but I ... don't know. You're right. When we're in battle, I'm not thinking about them as equals or anything like that. And I guess...that's wrong.

[ But he doesn't really sound like he thinks that's true. See, it's complicated!!

And he should feel things about Dodger's admissions but ... from what he's heard about Arzial and the man who raised him, they were fuckers. ]

I would surely think it would. Sometimes I have these dreams...where Martin is telling me I shouldn't have killed Istvan Toth. Like he's ... disappointed in me. But I had to do it.

[ He gulps down a larger portion of his drink too. ] You want to stop playing?

[smokedout]

[Dodger hesitates, but he nods. He's a depressive drunk, he's sure he'll only get worse if they keep playing.]

Probably a good idea. Save our livers the trouble.

[He sets his bottle aside, and gives Henry enough time to do the same before he lays back in bed and pulls his boyfriend with him. And once they're settled, he guides Henry into a long, warm kiss in the lips.]

We should get some sleep, before the sun comes up.

[horseliberator]

What?

[ More things that don't make sense to someone with a medieval understanding of human health. He shakes his head and puts his bottle aside too. It's not important. And his own consumption has made him feel...warm. The kiss even more so. So he smiles at Dodger almost kind of goofy. ]

More like we should get some sleep before I sing you song.

[smokedout]

I'll... explain it later.

[Because Dodger is a biology nerd, and he's going to want to show Henry charts of how organs work.

He smiles back, though, and runs his fingers through Henry's hair as he settles in.]

Why don't I sing for you. It'll help you have a good dream.

[Theoretically.

The song that he picks is one he's probably hummed in the shower before - this song but subbing in Henry's name. And sung much slower, to make it feel a little more like a lullaby.]

[ Henry might look at Dodger like he has an extra head, but he'll still listen. If he's not drunk of course. ]

Oh, yeah?

[ He murmurs in response, closing his eyes before Dodger even starts singing. The lyrics make him smile though, breathing out a half-assed laugh. He feels... warm. Pleased, despite some of the questions they'd managed. ]

Yeah, that's nice.

[Dodger keeps singing until it seems like Henry is asleep, or pretty close to it. It's nice... intimate, and domestic, in a way he hasn't really been with anyone since his first girlfriend. Even with Jason, he tried not to sing or show too much interest in things because the idiot would probably pass that information on to other people. Here, it feels like it matters a whole lot less, but he also trusts Henry not to talk about him too much.

Once he finishes the song, he presses one more kiss to Henry's brow before curling up against him, and dozing off.]
